You may have heard the phrase “vibe coding” and assumed it was a joke. It started as one. But behind the funny name is the biggest change in how software gets built since the cloud, and it matters to you even if you never plan to write a line of code.
The plain-English version
Traditionally, software was built the way houses are framed: a skilled person placing every board by hand. You described what you wanted, a developer translated it into thousands of lines of code over weeks or months, and you paid for every one of those hours.
Vibe coding flips the process. You describe what you want in ordinary language: “a page where my clients can book a consultation, pick a time that’s actually free on my calendar, and get a text confirmation.” AI writes the first working version in minutes. Then a developer steers: testing it, correcting it, hardening it, and shaping it around the real world, where users mistype their email and the internet cuts out mid-payment.
The name makes it sound casual. Done right, it is anything but. The AI supplies speed. The human supplies judgment, taste, and accountability.
Why business owners should care
Three practical consequences:
